About

Shirin Roshanaie is an Iranian-born visual artist based in Dubai whose practice spans painting, mixed media, sculpture, and Persian and Arabic calligraphy.

With a background in architecture and interior design, Roshanaie developed an approach to art grounded in an understanding of form, structure, material, and space. Her practice is shaped by a long-standing engagement with nature—not simply as scenery, but as a language expressed through traces of water, wind, erosion, light, and time. These traces become points of departure for works that explore memory, transformation, movement, and what remains beneath the visible surface.

Her visual language emerges through layers, organic textures, sculptural elements, and calligraphic gestures. Persian and Arabic calligraphy occupy a distinctive place within her work. Rather than treating script primarily as written language, Roshanaie approaches it as form—drawing from its rhythm, movement, density, and structure to create compositions that can be experienced beyond the literal meaning of the words.

Material and process are central to this exploration. Surfaces are built, altered, concealed, and revealed, allowing forms to emerge through a process of discovery. Layers become records of movement and time; texture creates depth; and light reveals details that may otherwise remain hidden. Across her work, the visible surface becomes a threshold between what is immediately seen and what lies beneath it.

Her architectural background continues to inform the way she considers proportion, depth, balance, and the relationship between an artwork and its surrounding space. This perspective allows her practice to move naturally between two- and three-dimensional forms while maintaining a consistent interest in material, spatial experience, and visual rhythm.

Roshanaie has exhibited her work across the UAE, including World Art Dubai, DIFC Art Nights, Ruya Art & Culture Gallery, and Satellite Gallery DIFC. Her work has also been presented by 7Art Gallery at Atlantis The Palm and W Dubai. In addition to her studio practice, she has participated in live Persian calligraphy performances and conducted calligraphy workshops in the UAE.

Her practice continues to explore the space between nature and human experience, language and abstraction, and the visible surface and the layers beneath it.
